But what does it matter and why should we care?

 Trust is the only reliable indicator of the quality of the workplace. Find low trust in a work place and you have found a bad work place. Find low trust and you have found a bad work place; find high trust and you have found a great one.  Where you find high trust you will always find high pride and camaraderie. A great place to work. It’s impossible for an employee to have a good all- around workplace experience unless she has a high trust relationship with her manager. This relationship is not a nice- to- have or an optional extra. The World best work places staffs are more successful than their peers, consistently out-performing them on every business metric that matters. All Peer groups, every metric extraordinary success. That’s what makes them worth emulating.

In a study conducted by Lanre Tomori and Kunle Malomo in 2013, a portfolio of Nigeria’s best work places outperformed the Nigerian stock market indices by a factor of three. In more recent years, we have observed that the best workplaces in Africa also outperform their peers in key metrics like revenue per full time equivalent; total cost of workplace; time to fill key employee roles; employment brand strength scores and tenure of high performing and high potential employees. Does strong financial performance enable companies to treat their people? A four year research project—–led by Alex Edmans of the London Business School—- into the Fortune 100 best companies to work for definitively answered this ‘chicken and egg’ question. Edman established conclusively that employee well being precedes positive financial performance. In other words, taking good care of employee’s causes good financial performance.

For close to thirty years now, GPTW has researched the various advantages that organizations that build high trust work places enjoy, and each year Fortune Magazine publishes our List of the Best Companies to Work For. Annual studies of seven thousand organizations and feedback from more than thirteen million employees in eighty countries show that high-trust organizations attract and retain top talent, innovate more and better, provide higher- quality service, and deliver stronger financial performance. Stock market performance is one such measure and research shows that companies with high-trust cultures consistently generate superior returns for their investors. For example, independent investment firm FTSE Russell reports that the stock market returns of the publicly-help- high-trust companies recognized by GPTW and Fortune Magazine over a seventeen (17) year period are nearly three times greater than the market average, while a portfolio of India’s best work places outperformed Indian stock market indices by a factor of nearly four during the five years leading up to 2013.
